Panama Internet Service Improving! by: Wolf Sebring
Panama Internet Service - There is a lot of opportunity in Panama these days for communications companies because of the project to widen the Panama Canal. But you will find that broadband internet technology is in its early stages here and many folks using internet are doing so through dialup. But this is changing very fast with many communities starting to get broadband. If you use a dialup modem in Panama, you may have some difficulties with poor line quality causing the modem speed to 'kick down' to be able to handle the bandwidth. While the dialup companies will not let out information on the quality of their phone lines, keep in mind that this is a tropical region with torrential rain downpours. Heat, rain, and humidity equals oxidation and corrosion. Many of these phone switches and circuits are underground where the corrosive elements of nature do their work. It stands to reason that there is somewhat of a risk that the phone line that you use a dialup modem on may not be of the highest quality. But actually, these days wireless technology is so popular and Panama is catching up with 27 internet wi-fi hotspots in the main city. If you venture outside the city with your laptop you are on your own. Some locations offer the service for free while others such as Hotspot Panama offer a pre-paid service through the merchants at the venues where the service is provided. For example, Dunkin Donuts at the Extreme Planet on Balboa Avenue offers wi-fi hotspot access for $19.95 per 8 hours or $3.00 for one hour of use. These prices are subject to change. If you only need to check your e-mail once in awhile then an internet cafe may be just what you need in Panama. These are places where you basically pay a small fee to use a computer in their shop. These shops are filled with many cubicles of computers. Sometimes, if you bring your laptop, the provider might even let you connect to it's network for the same fee. When asking directions to the local internet cafe and the locals are having a hard time understanding you, refer to the internet cafe as cyber (cee-ber), that may help. There are plenty of cybers around. Of course, Panama internet service is offered by many hotels as part of their services. Check with the hotel desk prior to making reservations if you must have internet access. |
